Yesterday, I featured a gorgeous Walking Dead edible sculpture featuring Lori Grimes in her wedding dress. Today, I’m featuring Carolina Lara’s 2nd sculpture which goes with the first one. This amazing edible sculpture is called “Carol Peletier: You Change”.
Carolina Lara made this as part of The Baking Dead, a collaboration consisting of 50 plus cake and sugar artists celebrating the hit AMC series The Walking Dead. This collaboration is also helping to spread the word about Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness. You can find The Baking Dead on the web, Facebook, and Twitter.
These sugar artists come from all over the globe. Carolina Lara is from Pennsburg, Pennsylvania. Each artist chose a character or scene from the show to recreate in sugar or cake form. They were asked to incorporate the emotion and relationships that are conveyed in the show and use butter, sugar, candy and cake to make you “feel” through their piece, in much the same way that the show conveys such strong emotions.
Since the beginning of the show, the issue of domestic violence has reared it’s ugly head and continues to be an issue faced throughout the series. The Baking Dead decided to dedicate this collaboration to all the survivors of domestic violence and to link with as many domestic violence prevention and awareness organizations as possible, including the National Center on Domestic & Sexual Violence. Many in the group have been touched by or are survivors of domestic violence in one form or another and felt that this would be a great opportunity to get the word out.
Carol Peletier is a perfect character for The Baking Dead to spotlight because she is a survivor of domestic violence. The comic and television versions of Carol are very different people and because of that, they have very different fates in the Walking Dead. But, one thing that both version have in common is that they are a survivor of domestic violence. According to Wikipedia, the abuse Carol faced by her husband was explicitly shown in the TV show whereas it was merely hinted at in the comic.
The Walking Dead is about how people respond under unbelievable pressure. Carol is one of the main characters in the Walking Dead TV show. As the series has progressed, she has discovered her inner strength.
That’s why Carolina Lara included the quote:
You fight it.
You don’t give up.
and one day
you just
CHANGE
The quotes comes from the episode Indifference. It is one of the last things Carol says to Lizzie.
Carol is portrayed differently in the comic and TV show. From Wikipedia: “In the comic series, Carol exhibits a neurotic, self-centered, and naive demeanor. Throughout her time in the comics, she grows increasingly unstable, to the extent of self-destruction. The television show differs in these regards, as she is shown to be a stern, pragmatic, and compassionate individual who has been gradually building inner strength.” Wikipedia has a wonderful quote by Executive Produce Scott Gimple about this. "[Carol] was strong all along. The apocalypse didn't make her strong. The apocalypse made her show herself that she's strong".
The likeness of Melissa McBride, the actress who plays Carol Peletier on TV, is wonderful.
I really like how this contrasts with Carolina Lara’s companion piece featuring Lori Grimes. They have different color schemes. Lori’s statue is primarily white. This statue is primarily black and red. Lara’s first piece featured the ghost of Lori Grimes at her own grave. This piece features Carol at a grave. But in this case, Carol is alive and the grave isn’t hers. I’m guessing this is the grave of her daughter Sophia, since the doll that Sophia played with is laying nearby. The two skulls, the flowers, and Carol’s quote could also mean that this is Mika and Lizzie's graves.
